My Grey Knights have been seeing some more action on the table due to an influx of Chaos Marines and other daemon taint at the club…
Has the codex been broken and unlocked?
You can be it sure has just by looking at how Grey Knights place at various events, but what about on your local scene where games aren’t as cutthroat and other players bring an assortment of units to the table?
I’ve been revisiting some “for fun” ideas with the ‘knights with mixed results- some are hand down obvious, and others I’m still not really sure about…
Psybolts
On the competitive level psybolts are beyond a no brainer- +1 strength on autocannons and heavy bolters which are already twin linked…yes and yes!
But what about on storm bolters?
Why isn’t the cost to points ratio fair for a situational upgrade vs. the psybolts on the heavy weapons/vehicles which make them uber?
Psybolts on the rank and file ‘knights only really work (as in justified points) on larger squads- and then you are already paying a premium in price for the large squad size.
I’ve done it, and against marines both traitor and those misguided chapters who won’t submit to an inquisition inquiry I really don’t notice a difference- sure you are wounding on a 3+ but then they still get a 3+ armor save. Sure you could glance light tanks in theory, but big deal…
In a few games where I’ve faced off against T3/T4 models with no armor save such as rank and file orks and most small bug Tyranids the +1 strength has been awesome- ripping though them with an increased wound output.
So for now it really is hit or miss- maybe at some point if horde armies came back into style? From a fun perspective psybolts on the rank and file really don’t add much, save the points for other toys.
Mordrak
The man who I never leave home without- add a few ghost knights and a librarian with ‘rift and turn one is ALWAYS exciting. From that competitive POV you sometimes get lucky and tag some key units if your opponent doesn’t bubble wrap or castle up, but in fun based games Mordrak always delivers the goods…
Fun units you face like assault marines deployed and getting ready to jump, expensive thunder cannon batteries, hiding infiltrated units with no support, etc. For that next turn punch I also like a teleport homer on the libby to teleport in an incinerator squad next turn or two.
Assassins (named)
Competitively these guys are expensive and they compete for elite slots with paladins, venerable dreads, etc. But in fun games where you usually have a slot hanging out a lone assassin can really shine. I like the Callidus personally for the D6 hits and template attack, very handy for taking out enemy sniper and heavy weapon teams perched on high terrain, but for FUN the Vindicare wins out. Sure you are only getting in 2-3 shots at best before he dies, but those shots are really hold your breath while the die rolls moments and add a lot of character to the game…
