Grey Knights Vs. Tyranids: Special Mission

Sometimes you want to just throw down some models to see “what-if”, and for bragging rights- so this week we have my Grey Knights vs. James’ Tyranids in a small skirmish mission.

Backstory? Missions like this need one…

A recently tainted chaos infused artifact has been discovered on a lost planet, prompting the Grey Knights to go in and recover it to take back to the vaults of titan, as a vanguard group of Tyranids, drawn to the warp beacon of it, land and assault the Grey Knights.

If the Tyranids over-run the ‘knights and ingest the artifact, who knows how that will alter the hive fleet? Chaos is chaos, and chaos Tyranids can’t be tolerated!

Mission Rules?

The Grey Knight set up in the center of the table with a battle line, and must hold for six turns- if at the end of the game a single Grey Knight model is alive, the ‘Knights have beaten off the bugs, if they are wiped out, then the swarm claims the artifact. Just to make it even more interesting, the Tyranids have the sustained assault rule allowing them to recycle in every time a unit is destroyed.

Tactically I take a dreadnought, two small knight groups and a grand master thinking James would build his army like I would- Tervigons spawning lots of gaunts. Sacrifice my ‘knights and get the dread locked in with some gaunts and just ride the game out.

I forgot James likes stealers and broodlords…

I would have just dropped the GM, taken some incinerators, and upgraded to a venerable dread, following the same plan.

Stealers enter the fray, and I start off with a battle line of storm bolter, psycannon, and assault cannon fire inflicting some good looses despite cover.

Tyranids get a fantastic fleet roll, and they are stuck in the assault on both my Knights but fall just short of the dread who blasts away and then charges cutting down a group. On the right my Knight group battles it out, holding their own despite some rending looses, but on the left I get swarmed as James rolls some awesome rends- leaving only my grand master who then gets enveloped and torn apart.

With just the dread left, it is down to some furious dice rolling- can I inflict a loss or two and force LD, or can James rend through my armor? When the Knight squad finishes the stealers on the right they pile in on the dreads combat to force the stealers to split some attacks- desperately trying to buy time with their very lives….

…but eventually James starts rolling those sixes like crazy and my dread explodes…stealers overrunning the battle line…

Made it to the bottom of turn four.

So with a handful of Grey Knights vs. without number Tyranids how would you hold the line?

What list would you take?

Drive by Rhinos with incinerators?
