Ladies and gents- here is my army for the upcoming Conflict GT tournament in New York. Necrons of course, pre-heresy Death Guard are taking the field with Jawaballs’ Blood Angels in the doubles tournament and well get to them soon enough…
Right now these guys are for the most part the oldest models in my 40K collection, some real Necron history in them from being a White Dwarf army of three or so units, the old codex, and now the new codex. It's nice to get them back on the table, making so many new memories. Lolz, this army is older then some of the kids that play at the comic shop!
With the new codex I wanted to make a few adjustments and give them a new paint job- something for the next twenty years.
My first through was to paint them in a ceramic type color, but the few test subjects didn’t work out that great- painting ceramics is like painting yellow and white- you need some skill and experience with it before attempting an army wide project. Second thought was bone white to make them look like space skeletons, but with the old OOP models it just didn’t look right to me. So a variant of silver or metallic? In contrast to my other warrior/destroyer army which is the standard Necron silver I decided to go with an aged tin and patina look- a hint of rust and corrosion as they awaken from the tomb world. Fluff be damned, some of us still follow the Star Gods!
Stripped them all down which was actually pretty easy given everything in the army is metal and mostly one piece. From there I primed black and then dry brushed chainmail silver as a foundation. From there I built up layers of tin bitz followed by building up some highlighting on the edges with a mixture of tin bitz and metallic gold. Eyes, gauss, and hoses were goblin green, since well, I have a ton of it left from when I painted up my Fantasy Goblins. Basing is a mixture of crushed slate, sand, and bitz like skulls, cities of death, marine stuff, hoses, etc. Finally hit everything up with a wash and they are ready for the table.
So let’s get to the list…
First up is the Stormlord of course, we’ve talked about how I think he is one of the goto HQ choices in the book in and out of a command barge. Traveler was tempting, but without a command barge you are not getting his full points worth with the machine possession thingy.
Next is three groups of ten scarabs each backed by a spyder. Pretty standard there and nothing ground breaking. I do believe a unit of tomb blades is more fun and works better for how I play, but I don’t want to run afoul of any modeling requirements at the conflict since my tomb blades are proxied OOP destroyers- which just happen to look just like them, but “counts as” and proxies could be an issue, or maybe not, so I’m just skirting it all together anyway for now.
Behind the scarabs are five small warrior groups and a large immortal group pushing forward and then backing off with some of the warriors for objectives, etc.
Thrown in are two crypteks- one with veil, and the other with a chrnometron OR harp depending on the ruling I get ahead of time RE: Stormlord’s lighting attacks and the chronometron.
Five flayed ones are my throw away unit- for 65 points can you go wrong. Most of the time they seem to work out as an annoyance , and once they did win me a game by hiding out in a building all game and then contesting an objective.
And finally the Deceiver…I mean C’Tan Shard- come on, you know I’d be playing him regardless of the point cost. Worldscape has also been a mixed bag, but it does keep things interesting, and hordes that need terrain hate it.
Packed and ready to go- see you guys at the tournament!
