Necrons: Crypteks?

I’ve been reading a lot of the same lists that you guys have, some good, and others wishful thinking…

Where am I right now with my ‘crons? The last team up battle report I just posted shows the first 3rd of it- 30 scarabs as my fast attack. I’m not running a scarab farm with the spyders, but no doubt there is no arguing that scarabs are really good. Hardly broken like other units in many of the marine books, but not terribad either.

Why not a group of wraiths or something?

Scarabs are a real glass hammer, to get what I need out of them not running a farm means 3 X 10.

Why not run the far?

Well, first I’ve played spawning armies before like my five tervigon list for Tyranids, and if I wanted that I’d play that, second I don’t have 9 spyders, and third, that is a lot of points that I might not really need.

Which brings me to the topic of this post- crypteks.

Forget about a good Necron army vs. a bad Necron army build for a moment, and ask yourself are you going to cryptek or not?

Some say they are 100% mandatory, playing without them would be like playing Eldar with a farseer, or even Eldrad at this point, and I could see that point of view. However, I could also see the point of view in not needing Crypteks if you have the right type of build.

Over all, personally I’d say you want them, maybe not the S8 staff spam, but at least a solar pulse and chronometon. MAYBE a veil if you are into tricks like that.

What have I unlocked with Necrons so far?

Are we talking about a tournament list or hobby/fun at the club list?

For fun I’ve finally gotten to do my wraithwing list, and then there is my Necron air force list even if the models don’t exist yet,..but for tournament play my games seem to hint a flavor of Tyranids.

Not in the nerf sense, but in a unit complement sense.

Really quick my Tyranid 3 x 3 list was three trygons that run up and cause as much damage as they can before they die to las/missile/melta. While that is happening my three tervigons spawn and then swarm my opponent.

Necrons have been playing a lot like that also…

3 scarab swarms run up…three elite units second wave, warriors/immortals on objectives, crypteks to support stormlord.
