40K Template Technology?

So last night at the 40K club I had a chance to play Ed’s dreadwall marine list at 2K points for some upcoming NOVA and BFS tournament practice, trying out a few new ideas in the list, etc. Biggest thing for me right now is remembering to spawn gaunts and throw up FNP each turn.

What struck me as very interesting is how much the game changed with the CORRECT amount of terrain on the table, and as much as I have a few issues with the NOVA format, the design of table wide standard terrain does so much for the hobby as a whole. Big LOS blocking terrain in the center, scattered area and ruins terrain- places to hide, block LOS, etc. Staring at the table it really felt like to much terrain…

Anyway, about mid game when I was making my push through the center into Ed’s army, everything I had was bunched up behind terrain to hide (or at least get real 4+ cover saves) from his las cannons and multi-meltas and if he had any real template shots I would have taken a real beating- which got me thinking- where have all the templates gone in 40K?

Sure we may have an occasional flamer shot or flip the switch on a missile to fire off a frag, but what about dropping some serious template spam? Other than a few sister immolater spam armies that I see from time to time, templates seem to be dead and buried.

Sure the scatter? So what? Even twin linked Vulkan melta shots miss.
True that some armies just can’t do templates (Necrons) but many can- IG, Marines, and even surprisingly Eldar to some extent.

What about designing an army to drop lots of templates and then have a strategy to force your opponent, or at least encourage them to bunch up so you can drop those templates?
