Redeployment Tactics

Here are some deployment tactics that I like to pull against a static or gun line army when they force me to go first. Works flawlessly with Saim-Hann Eldar, but as always take a step back and think about how you can pull it off with your army regardless of what you play…

The key to a static or heavy shooting army is terrain and positioning- they want to use terrain to their advantage and deployment to pound you into the ground. Here is the deployment work around. I start by deploying on either the far right or left side to minimize shots from the opposite side and to also encourage my opponent to deploy on my same side and center. Seer council is in the front, grav tanks on the front and side to make a wall, with my fragile vypers in the center. Both of my jetbike groups then go in reserve. My opponent deploys to what he thinks is the best position to his army and plans…

Seer council fortunes up and goes straight out to cause trouble. Vyper hide behind my grav tanks and shoot along with the tanks. Target priority is anything that can threaten my AV 12 tanks. With correct placement, some half way decent terrain, and cover saves I can last a turn. When my jetbikes come in- all or one on turn two they move on the table from the opposite far side as my wave serpent and fire prism then move fast and kick in star engines across the table to join them- this is the moment of redeployment. This will attack my opponent’s weak side and the sight of so many jetbikes joined by tanks in a single movement turn is impressive even if jetbikes are well, just jetbikes. I now focus my attack on that side of the table as my vyper provide long range support to the center. Eventually I’ll sweep the sides and meet in the center. The key is to redeploy to undo your opponent’s plans and then exploit him while he is trying to redeploy. Vid below shows this in action- check out my deployment and then when the jetbikes enter the table followed by where my vypers are. Ignore the fire prism since it is out of place and should be with the wave serpent but vs. Necrons I was tank shocking everything I could ram that tank with- against anybody else the fire prim would be linking up with the wave serpent.

Hey Fritz,
I'm following your Block now for a while and it helped me a lot with getting into the 5. Edition. I'm all green with Eldar still but thanks to your tactics and more over your way of understanding the game I won more than half of my games.

I play a Saim Hann Style army very close to yours but I still vary Amry Lists a lot and I usually play on a smaller scale.

Getting to the point: You say here that you deploy your Council at the frontline even though your enemy has first turn. I once did this, too. Missing fortune and my 3+Save my council of 4 died in the first turn of my enemy. It was 750P and I hardly fought out a win in the 5. round with some psychology(bringing my opponent to actually shooting at a Fire Prism instead of killing my last lone Jetbike 8-D). But unfortunatly it went on with a 5+ and there was the 6. So a draw in the end. But still I would never again place my council in range of anything serious if I don't have first turn. Hasn't it ever happend to you that your opponent just whiped your unfortuned council out?
