‘Cats Vs. ‘Cannons

Checking out some Jetbike ideas * I have broken down my Jetbikes into four units led by a Warlock and with a Shuriken Cannon. Smaller squds means more scoring units but a greater chance of breaking and running 3d6 if they fail morale. Initially I ran large 8 unit squads to help offset that but I’m feeling more tactically comfortable with my Jetbikes to pull off the smaller units.

Generally I’m thinking about doing the tried and true move out, shoot and then move back in the assault phase with the Shuriken Cannon Jetbike to draw my opponent out and into range for my Shuriken Catapults and Warlock.

I’ve also learned that Shuriken Cannons on a Vyper isn’t the best upgrade given the range of the cannon. In order to use it I need to get within 24” which means I would be in range for return bolter, storm bolter, plasma gun, etc. fire which will tear up my Vypers even with the Holo-Fields. Better to keep my Vypers back at 36” ish to fire the Star Cannons staying out of range of most or all my opponent’s weapons- except Tau of course.

Recently my Vypers have been shooting at 36” and then once the squad/unit is weakened I move in to the 12” range to open up with both the Shuriken Catapults and Star Cannons to finish the unit off. Shooting at 24” just tends to leave me a little vulnerable. With the downgrade I save 60 points which buys me another Shuriken Cannon and Warlock for my Jetbikes.

Apocalypse Saim-Hann Strike Force

Gearing up for the clubs next Apocalypse event I’m putting together a small strike force.

1 Farseer on Jetbike W/ Ghost Helm, Singing Spear, Rune Armor, Spirit Stones, Runes of Witnessing, Eldrich Storm, Guide, Mindwar

5 Warlocks on Jetbike(s) W/ Rune Armor, Singing Spear, Destructor

@ 468 Points with the rest going to my team mates to spend on more IG tanks.

I’ll keep myself small and hopefully unnoticed on the table with my Farseer using guide on the unit to aid in throwing the singing spears and then closing as needed for anti-tank. Or using Eldrich Storm to spin the tank and hit the back. Mindwar to snipe HQ’ s and basically turbo-boosting out of trouble. The 4+ invulnerable save will protect me as best as can be against the heavy stuff. Of course with some bad rolls I could get dropped with one template.

Saim-Hann Team Battle

Saim-Hann & Blood Angels Vs. Generic Space Marines & Imperial Guard
2000 Points, Seek & Destroy

With all the club tables save one taken for an Apocalypse game in use myself and three other guys decided to play a team up battle of 1000 points for each player. I teamed up with my friend C. playing Blood Angels as we faced off against imperial Guard and generic Space Marines.

The Blood Angels loaded up on all assault marines led by a chaplain with a whirlwind in support as I took a load out of vypers, a fire prism, and a small jetbike squad. I really wanted to squeeze my farseer in the list but at 1000 points things were just too tight. The plan was for the Blood Angels to support as the Saim-Hann provided fire support and the anti-tank and AP 2 killing weapons.

Imperial Guard fielded two leman russ’ a basilisk, and tons or IG platoons and conscripts. 1000 points of guard still buys you a lot of toys. The other marine player took an assault squad, a venerable dreadnought, and a terminator command squad led by a chaplain and a force commander.

We took the first turn and launched the attack as the Blood Angels charged forward staying behind area terrain as my brightlance vypers missed their mark on the leman russ and the fire prism hit but failed to penetrate. Vyper star cannon fire into the terminators only downed one- without the guide of my farseer I was really hurting and we didn’t have such a stellar first round.

Taking their turn our opponents dropped a basilisk shot dead on dropping ten Blood Angels as their assault marine squad moved in an engaged another BA squad in the assault. I took a few heavy bolter hits on my vypers which shrugged them off with holo-fields.

Sending his Death Company against the terminators I softened them up with fire from my jetbikes before adding them to the charge since we couldn’t allow the terminators to break through and tie us op in an assault as the IG squads fired on everything else. The terminators tore through the Death Company and my jetbikes with ease but they were then put down by star cannon fore.

Eventually making it into the assault the Blood Angels closed into the ranks of the Imperial Guard as my vypers and fire prism broke off and went tank hunting dropping the two leman russ’ tanks while loosing the fire prism in return.

Ending the game at turn six all the Blood Angels were wiped out to the last man as my vypers stood against the basilisk and a conscript platoon of IG which remained.

Imperium vs. Imperium- either way the Eldar couldn’t loose.

Saim Hann Tactical Summary

Been reviewing some of my past battles and games at the club and I’ve put together a quick summary of fighting different armies with my Saim-Hann setup @ 1750 points.
Hardest Armies To Beat:

Tau- By far the hardest battles yet fought with my Saim-Hann. I’m used to being the one with the most firepower on the board and the Tau have me beat on that, range, and their units cost less. Sniper teams and infiltrating suits really mess things up. Every game I’ve been forced to close and assault with my warlocks and jetbikes to win (or loose) the day. Hate Tau!

Dark Eldar- Matching my speed and firepower it seems like all my vs. Dark Eldar games comes down to who moves first to get off that volley of shots to take down skimmers before they have moved so shots become penetrating.

Ravenwing Space Marines- Same as the Dark Eldar only worse with lots of land speeders with assault cannons.

Eldar: Never played Saim-Hann vs. Saim-Hann but a falcon heavy list with guardians is tough to beat matching my firepower and skimming ability on the vehicles.

Easiest Armies To Beat:

Space Marines- With all my star cannons and brightlances my list regularly rolls over Space Marines from both shooty lists and close combat lists such as Black Templars- the only exception being all drop pod armies which I have only been able to eek out a draw, all others were a slaughter.

Imperial Guard- Drop the tanks with brightlances and target the heavy weapon teams and then nothing can hurt my vypers- IG S 3 las guns Vs. AV 10 on my vypers.

Tyranids- Vypers and fire prism target the big shooty ‘fexes and warriors and then swoop in with jetbikes to wipe out the rest.

Daemon Hunters / Grey Knights- Way few models to put up a fight with my mobility nullifying shrouding and star cannons blasting through the armor.

Middle Of The Road:

Necrons- WBB gives them the staying power and Immortals have some good range.

Witchhunters- Acts of faith really mess things up.

As for Orks missing the list- I’ve never faced Orks with my Saim-Hann. Something I’ll have to be out on the look for and report back on. I’m sure that will change in the club with the new Ork codex coming out.

Looking over my past games the question is where to go from here. The unit that performed the worst for me was the Wave Serpent and my Storm Guardians. While they did help turn the tide against Tau in one of my GT games on Monday nights at the club the Wave Serpent gets shot up without holo-fields and my Storm Guardians just don’t have the mobility to keep up with the rest of the army. They tend to get isolated and taken down even if they do mange to do some damage in the process. For the most part I play them as bait- dropping them into the center of the board to draw my opponent out so my Jetbikes and Vypers can swoop in. Stinks to be a Storm Guardian in my Warhost- you want us to do what?

I’m thinking about dropping them which will free up points for some more Warlocks. Break my Jetbikes down into smaller units for more scoring units and more shuriken cannons, led by a Warlock with Destructor.

I can also add two Warlocks on Jetbikes to my Farseer and give her Eldrich Storm also with all three carrying singing spears. From this standpoint should I do this: Right now my Farseer rides alone so she can’t be directly picked out when she is mixed in with the other units. If I giver her a retinue then they and her can be fired on with just a target priority test?

Warhammer 40,000 Apocalypse @ The Gaming Club

The gaming club held an Apocalypse game today which I had to miss from not having that day off from work. Came in later after work to get a game in check out how the epic battle was going. 6000 points each side, good guys vs. bad guys with baneblades, titans, tanks, monoliths, and lots and lots of men. The picture above is about 5 or so hours into the game. Based on watching the battle for a bit and my one apoc. game from the grand tournament I don’t think my Saim-Hann could competitively compete in it. Jetbikes are nothing and I’d need a ton more vypers and falcons/prisms.

Saim-Hann Vs. Tyrandis

1750 Take & Hold Alpha
Ice World

Deployment started with both of us taking cover behind large area terrain ice hills. Facing another uber-gaunt army backed by shooty warriors and a hive tyrant my plan was to again engage the warriors with my vypers- being vehicles they could pick them out from the gaunts and once the synapse was disrupted I’d move in for the kill on the gaunts. While doing this I was going to support the attack with my jetbikes once the warriors were down and wave serpent in my storm guardians into the center to begin holding it for the objective.

Game started with my opponent passing my first turn as I moved my vypers over to the right with my fire prism in support as my wave serpent moved up center. My opponent stood still waiting for me to come to him while knowing that he could be in the center for objectives in two turn easy with the tyranid move through cover and fleet of his gaunts. Vypers engaged the warriors as I lost the fire prism to a venom cannon shot- a 5 & 6 on the holo fields roll. Concentrating half his fire on the vypers he began to move three of his gaunt broods forward as we moved into the middle of the game. My storm guardians took up the center taking cover behind a building as my jetbikes moved forward breaking off to shoot and assault the other two broods- tying them up for the rest of the game and preventing them from reaching the objective. Laying down more fire with my storm guardians and wave serpent the sg’s took the gaunt charge and killed them down as they ran from being out of synapse as my vypers traded shots back and forth with the warriors and hive tyrant loosing two vypers. Ending the game I pulled off a victory with one scoring unit (my storm guardians) in the center as tying up the rest of the gaunts with my jetbikes prevented the swarm of them from taking the center.

More Saim-Hann Glory

Full coverage of the 2007 GT tournament is up and my Saim-Hann Warhost made it into the cool model section:

Shining Spears

Any thoughts on Shining Spears? I’m looking to diversify my army a bit but still keep the Saim-Hann theme and Shining Spears run on Jetbikes. 3 in a box and they will match my Guardian Jetbikes so fitting them into the theme and look of my army is easy. Stat wise they kind of look ok hitting on 3+ with one S6 AP 4 shot at 6” before charging into the assault. But at 35 points a model vs. 22 for my Guardian Jetbikes what can they do better then one of my Warlock lead Jetbike units?
In the assault they still get only one lousy attack (although with a power weapon) and I wonder if in shooting if the 1 shot lance is better then a twin linked shuriken catapult followed by my Warlocks destructor? I can’t even really see these guys being tank busters as my Warlock can do the deed better with his witchblade/ singing spear. I’m going to be on the lookout for some tactica on these guys.

2007 Grand Tournament Report

Friday: Apocalypse!

Left for the tournament on Friday morning with three gaming club buddies who were playing Necrons, Imperial Fists, and Tyranids. We got down there in time for the Apocalypse event which was spread over three boards with three players on each side. The setup was each player had 1500 points and a strategic asset to take as the armies were arrayed as “good” vs. “bad”. Teaming up with the good guys I signed up to play on the forest board since the city fight and tau outpost board both had baneblades, titans, and Tyranid bio-titans that I would have been going up against.

Our side was my Saim-Hann warhost, an all drop pod Space Wolf army and another Eldar army heavy on pathfinders and harlequins facing off against Thousand Sons, Imperial Guard, and Eldar.

The mission was to find a crash spaceship hidden in one of the forests while claiming the other forests as objectives. Planning things out we took the anti-plant bombardment, an orbital bombardment, and drop pod assault as our strategic assets. Over all the Space Wolf player was going to drop into the ranks of the Imperial Guard player, our Eldar player was going to take on the other Eldar player and I was going to take on the Thousand Sons.

Starting the game we hit the board with the anti-plant removing all the trees and foliage from the board revealing where the crashed spaceship was and taking away the 5+ cover saves for the Imperial Guard and Eldar army. I saved my orbital bombardment since all the Thousand Sons rubic marines were in there transports.

As the game went on the Space Wolf player dropped in and fought it out valiantly but was eventually overwhelmed and killed to the last man- although taking out scores of IG infantry and two basilisks helped tremendously.

I sent my Vypers on ahead to brightlance and starcannon the T-Sons rhinos taking one down and pinning the men inside as the IG player deep striked storm troopers behind our lines with melta and plasma guns which tore into the other Eldar player on our team. Swinging my Jetbikes and Farseer around I took them out and used mindwar to drop the Imperial Guard HQ.

My jetbikes were then hit with an orbital bombardment pretty much blasting them to nothing as my Vypers moved on killing a Thousand Sons demon prince HQ with massed brightlance and star cannon fire.

Advancing his three rubic marine squads forward to face me there wasn’t much I had left that could hold off the T-Sons advance so I moved back behind cover waiting for them to get as close as they could before my remaining jetbikes were going to move out, fire away and then assault. However, during the next turn the T-Sons did a strategic redeploy moving off to the other side of the board to help out there. (Talking to the player later he figured the remainder of my jetbikes and vypers were no threat.) Freeing up the pressure I moved out with my units as my Farseer mind wared the other TS demon prince HQ killing him as I then claimed objectives with the speed of the vypers and jetbikes.

Ending the game we tied for objective points even thought our side did claim the crashed spaceship since we took such heavy losses. On the other boards/sectors the titans and baneblades pretty much wiped everything out with the “bad” guys claiming two wins and our table a draw.

During the award ceremony for the Apocolypse game later that night I got the Headhunter Award since my army took out/killed the most HQ units in the game, which was very cool with the speed of my Farseer jetbike and mindwar doing the deed.

Saturday: Grand Tournament Day 1

My first game for the day was against another Eldar player who was guardian and harlequin heavy with Eldrad leading the group. The mission was take and hold the center as I basically hung back with my bikes and tried to take out as much as I could with my vypers and fire prism. Eventually I wound up having to close with my jetbikes to take our the harlequins which I completely wiped out with warlock destructor and massed shuriken catapult fire. Taking losses back from all his guardian squads we finished the game with me having three scoring units in the center to his four. Such a close fight!

My second game was against Dark Eldar as my opponent took first turn moving out his skimmers and taking down my vypers and fire prism with darklance fire penetrating them since thay hadn’t moved you. Even with holo-fields I got wiped out. His wytches disembarked, moved, and somehow assaulted both my jetbikes in turn one wiping them out. Disaster! Starting my turn I had two vypers left, and my wave serpent with storm guardians, along with my Farseer. Fighting now for honor I mind warred his HQ and failed with a perils of the warp which my ghosthelm failed to save resulting in an instant kill on my Farseer. I did my best to hold out using cover but got wiped out to the last.

Going into the third game I faced an all warrior and destroyer necron army with a monolith and some scarab swarms. Again fighting as best I could my opponent just outnumbered me and was making awesome WBB rolls. Holo-fields did save my vypers allowing me to at least pull our a draw in points.

Sunday: Grand Tournament Day 2

Starting off the second day I was finally facing a Space Marine army for a cleanse mission with a long deployment. All infantry with terminators in support my opponent deployed along his edge pretty even and infiltrated his scouts to claim another table quarter. I deployed in the center and let him take first turn with nothing to shoot at since I was all behind area terrain. Moved my fire prism to the far left to make him thinking I was going to attack there as my vypers moved right and stared tearing into his first tactical squad. Redeploying a bit to take on my vypers and fire prism I weathered the fire as his terminators came in next to my jetbikes taking out a few with assault fire and storm bolter fire.

I then massed jetbike fire on his terminators and charged the survivors with my storm guardians wiping them out. Continuing to isolate his squads with my vypers and fire prisms I wiped him out to the last man with only loosing one squad of jetbikes.

Going into my last game it was a seek and destroy mission against Tau on a very sparse lava board. Fire warriors, suits, sniper teams and hammerheads all awaited in cover and lined up with lanes of fire.

I took first turn since I saw that my vypers could move out and fire on his tanks hopefully nailing them with penetrating hits before they could start moving and skimming. Guided brightlance fire dropped one and immobilized the other as I weathered some return fire with only a few glanced on my vypers with the holo fields holding them. I dropped some fire prism fire on one squad of fire warriors wiping them out completely as return fire managed to drop my ‘prism with a roll of two sixes on the holo-field.

Calculating the range across the board as best I could I figured it would take me at least two turns to get into range with my jetbikes and my vypers along couldn’t stand up to all that fire so I decided to go for the glory and charge all my units across the board- turbo boosting everything and 24” moving all my vehicles which I know took my opponent by surprise.

Facing the full onslaught of the Tau army I lost a unit of jetbikes and my brightlance on my wave serpent. Now in range on my turn my remaining jetbikes opened fire and then assaulted the first unit of fire warriors wiping them out before consolidating on the next.

Storm guardians poured out of the wave serpent and charged a team of stealth suits downing them before taking heavy losses, passing morale, and then moving into another group of fire warriors cutting them down with a sweeping advance.

The rest of the game was all assaults with my jetbikes moving down the line as my vypers stayed completely behind LOS blocking cover. Finishing the game I lost one squad of jetbikes, my storm guardians, and a fire prism vs. wiping the Tau out to the last=,by far the most exciting and tension filled game of the tournament since I would have been wiped out if he had rolled better shooting down my charge, and that my jetbikes were finally making their saves.

Finishing out the tournament at two losses, one draw, and two wins I was pretty happy with how my Saim-Hann performed.

Armies
“Hey buddy, there is another Saim-Hann here.” Replied my Imperial Fist friend during the lunch break when we were all checking out the other armies laid out on the tables. Checking it out I wouldn’t call it “Saim-Hann” since it only had four jetbikes and a falcon with the rest being harlequins, rangers, guardians, and a wraitlord. Other Eldar armies were all stocking Eldrad, rangers, falcons, and harlequins with the odd vyper and sprinklings of jetbikes here and there.

I expected to see more Space Marine armies here and there but it seemed like most people were playing Tyranids, Tau, Chaos, and Imperial Guard. I saw one ‘sisters army and no demon hunters/grey knights.

Another big lessons I learned that all the missions were “scoring units” only- no victory points so all the armies were troop heavy in small squads for the most scoring units. I think in total I saw one land raider and the Imperial Guard armies only had basilisks and maybe a hellhound. Troops for claiming objectives were everything and with only seven scoring units in my army it was a tough battle going up against armies with two to three times more scoring units then mine.

Award Ceremony

During the awards ceremony at the end of the game my Imperial Fist all terminator army led by Lysander friend took home the Player’s Choice award and I won the baneblade door prize which everybody joked about now they guy with the Saim-Hann army would have something to actually shoot at.

Lots of fun, awesome time, and my right shoulder is actually sore from all the dice rolling.
